Richmond, North Yorkshire is a town of unique character and beauty which has changed little through the centuries.
Founded by the Normans in 1071 the town grew up around the castle built on the 'riche-mont' or 'strong-hill' that gave the town its name and whose massive keep dominates all other buildings around. The first of all Richmonds, the Town was an important regional centre in the medieval period, when royal charters were granted giving rights to hold markets and fairs.

• Richmond Castle, Breathtakingly sited on a rocky promontory above the River Swale, the great castle of Richmond is among the oldest Norman stone fortress in Britain, begun in the decades after the conquest. The towering keep, over 30 metres (100 feet) high and remarkably complete within, was added during the reign of Henry II in the 1170s : its roof provides splendid views over the clustered houses of the pretty market town of Richmond.

• Walk through history, take a stroll around the Georgian town of Richmond or a challenging hike through the wooded valleys of the River Swale, being just a short distance away from the Yorkshire Dales means there's plenty of hills, woodland and mountains to explore.
